history
Powel Crosley, a successful American inventor and entrepreneur, built the estate as a winter home for his wife, Gwendolyn, in 1929.
Ten short years later, she passed away from tuberculosis in the upstairs bedroom. Once she died, Powel all but abandoned the place.
During World War II, he allowed the Army Air Corps use of the retreat to house men learning to fly fighter planes.
Throughout several subsequent property transfers, the home remained vacant, was vandalized and fell into disrepair.
In 1982, the estate was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. However, it was not until the early 90’s that Seagate was officially saved from commercial development by Manatee County and restored.
Legend holds that Gwendolyn still resides in the home. When guests acknowledge her presence, she ensures that you will have beautiful weather on the day of your event.
Brooke says,
“PLEASE be sure to say hello to Gwendolyn when you arrive!”
